Marine Crew Metal Fire Door Refinished in Situ
About This Repair
On board ship, this blue painted metal fire door marked Crew Only had become cloudy and stained around the lever and the lower half of the leaf. Watermarks and discolouration spread across the painted steel, with scuffing where hands and trolleys repeatedly met the surface. The brief was to repair a fire rated door in situ, since taking a marine fire door out of service is far from straightforward at sea.
The staining points to moisture and salt air, a constant challenge in marine settings, combined with the wear of a crew door in daily use. A metal fire door still has to hold its rating, so the painted finish needs restoring correctly rather than simply rolling fresh paint over the marks. Our technician cleaned back and refinished the leaf to an even blue grey, removing the cloudiness and blending the worn lever area into the surrounding colour. The certified fire integrity of the door is preserved, with the repair carried out on site between sailings.
Refinishing painted steel to a smooth, uniform result without ridges, lap marks or trapped moisture is harder than it appears, and that is where a quick respray tends to fail. Magicman has refinished doors across demanding environments since 1993, using proprietary materials for a lasting result. The after image shows a clean, consistent blue leaf with the staining gone.
