Worn Timber Counter Capping Rail Recoloured and Blended
About This Repair
The timber capping rail running along this communal counter had simply been loved to death. Years of hands, sleeves and passing traffic rubbing over the same curved edge had worn straight through the protective lacquer and into the stain beneath, leaving a large pale, fibrous bare patch where the rich brown finish used to be. The before image shows the contrast clearly: a warm polished rail at one end giving way to a scuffed, washed out section with the timber grain raised and dry from constant wear.
This wood counter capping rail repair was all about reading the existing colour and grain, then rebuilding the finish to match. Our technician sealed and stabilised the worn timber, recoloured the bare area to blend into the deeper tones either side, and laid down a fresh durable topcoat that wrapped the rounded profile evenly. The after photograph shows a single continuous rail again, the warm chestnut colour flowing right around the corner with the sheen consistent from one end to the other and no hint of where the wear had been.
Recolouring worn wood looks easy in a video, but feathering new stain into an existing finish without a hard tide line, especially on a rounded edge in a busy space, is genuinely skilled work. We have been restoring timber surfaces professionally since 1993, more than thirty years, with fully trained technicians and our own proprietary stains and coatings developed for on site blending.
