Bullseye Impact Chip in Window Glass Repaired

About This Repair

A flying stone or piece of grit had struck this window square on, leaving a classic bullseye chip with a small crater at its heart and short cracks star bursting around it. The tape measure in the before image puts it at around an inch across, big enough to catch the eye and, more worryingly, to spread further if left alone. We handled it as a professional glass scratch repair, stabilising the impact before it could run.

The cause was straightforward impact damage, the sort that happens when debris is thrown up from nearby ground works, mowing or passing traffic. A sharp object hitting toughened or float glass punches out a tiny cone of material and sends fine fracture lines radiating outwards. Temperature swings and vibration then tempt those lines to creep, which is why a fresh chip is best dealt with quickly.

Our technician cleaned the cavity, drew our resin into the chip and the surrounding fractures, then cured and polished it flush. The after image shows clear glass with the van behind it reading sharply and no trace of the original crater.

Shop bought glass scratch repair kit products are aimed at this kind of chip, but a rushed DIY fill commonly traps air in the breaks, leaving a cloudy blemish and fractures that carry on spreading underneath. Magicman has been repairing impact damage for more than thirty years, and our fully trained technicians use proprietary resins matched to the glass, so the repair holds and stays discreet.
