Cracked Antique Painted Figure Bench Restored
About This Repair
This ornate painted figure formed part of a decorative bench, a terracotta toned sculpture of a seated youth holding a posy, set against a richly painted frame. Across the chest and shoulder a long crack had opened up, running diagonally through the torso, with smaller splits and losses around the join. Solid figures like this are surprisingly fragile, and a knock during cleaning or moving, combined with age and the natural shrinkage of old painted plaster, is usually enough to crack the body and threaten a much larger break. This cracked terracotta painted figure restoration called for careful structural work as well as sympathetic colour matching.
Our technician stabilised and filled the crack, rebuilt the missing sections and then hand finished the repair to follow the modelled detail of the chest and arm. The painted surface was colour matched to the warm terracotta and the soft greens of the foliage so the line of damage disappears into the figure. In the after image the youth sits whole and undamaged on the bench, the crack gone and the original character of the piece fully intact.
Antique and decorative restoration is precise, detailed work, and a rushed home repair on a cracked figure tends to leave a visible ridge or a colour that simply does not sit right against aged paint. Magicman has handled delicate furniture and sculptural pieces since 1993, with trained technicians who respect the original finish.
