Flaking Gold Staircase Balustrade Base Recoloured

This gold balustrade base recolour rescued a tired staircase fitting without dismantling the handrail. The gold finished base plate where the balustrade post meets the floor was heavily flaked and worn, the gilt coating speckled away to leave a blotchy, pitted surface across the top of the plate and around the post collar. Set against the gleaming gold uprights, the dull, spotted base let down the whole feature.

Wear here is inevitable. The base plate sits at foot level where it is kicked, scuffed, mopped and walked past constantly, and over the years that traffic lifts the thin decorative finish and exposes the duller metal underneath. Once it starts flaking the deterioration spreads quickly across the plate.

Our technician cleaned and prepared the worn base, then recoloured and refinished it to match the rich gold of the surrounding balustrade, rebuilding an even, consistent sheen across the plate and collar. The after image shows a smooth, uniform gold base that blends seamlessly with the posts, the flaking and speckling completely gone.
