Corroded Bronze War Memorial Plaque Restored

This bronze war memorial plaque restoration brought a set of corroded commemorative panels back to dignified, legible condition. Mounted on the sandstone front of a colliery workmen's memorial hall, the cast bronze plaques had weathered to a dull, blotchy green, the protective patina broken up by corrosion and the engraved names and dedication almost lost beneath the oxidation. The two figurative relief panels and the central name tablet had all gone the same flat, mottled grey green.

Decades of rain, pollution and exposure are the cause. Bronze left outdoors develops an uneven, active corrosion that eats into the detail, and on a memorial that means the very names it exists to honour become hard to read. This is delicate heritage metalwork, so aggressive cleaning or repainting would do more harm than good.

Our technician carefully cleaned back the corrosion, stabilised the surface and recoloured the bronze to a deep, even tone, lifting the lettering and the relief detail so the inscription reads clearly once more. The after image shows the central tablet with its dedication and the men's names sharp again, the panels matched and the memorial looking cared for.
