Crumbling Natural Stone Window Mullion Restored
About This Repair
The slim natural stone mullion dividing the lights of this old window had crumbled badly. A long split ran through the section between the upper and lower panes, the face was pitted and friable, and material had been lost where decades of weather had eaten into it. Stone decays from the inside out once moisture gets a hold, and this one had reached the point where the frame above it was barely supported. It was a clear job for a careful repair stone window sill style restoration on the surviving original fabric.
Online guides on how to repair sandstone window sills make it sound like a quick patch, yet matching the colour, the texture and the original mouldings of weathered stone is exactly where home attempts come unstuck, and a shop bought stone repair kit rarely blends into mellowed masonry. Cutting out and replacing a section of original stone is slow, dear and hard to match too. Our fully trained technician carried out an engineered repair instead, with proprietary materials and over 30 years of experience since 1993. The loose, friable stone was raked back to a sound base, then the mullion was rebuilt, reprofiled and colour and texture matched to the surrounding stonework.
The mullion stands solid again, weathertight and continuous, the split and crumbling gone and the window properly carried once more. The repaired length reads as part of the original stone.
