Web of Scratches Polished Out of Window Glass
About This Repair
Look closely at the before image and you will see why this pane needed attention. A tight burst of fine scratches fanned out across the centre of the glass like a spider's web, each thread picking up the light and softening the view of the trees, fencing and rooftop beyond. The owner wanted to know whether anything could be done short of replacement, and our scratched glass repair service answered that question.
This kind of webbed scratching rarely comes from one event. It usually builds up where abrasive grit is dragged across the glass during cleaning, or where someone has rubbed at a stubborn mark and ground particles into the surface. The result is a cluster of shallow cuts radiating from a single spot, faint individually but very visible as a group once the light hits them.
Treating the pane on site, our technician worked the webbed area back and polished it through successive grades until the threads dissolved and the glass cleared. The after image shows a sharp, transparent view with the courtyard and reflected window reading crisply, no haze and no web in sight.
It is worth a word of caution on the DIY route. A scratched glass repair kit bought off the shelf often leaves a milky, swirled patch where the webbing used to be, which distorts the view and tends to cost more to put right than the original problem. With over thirty years behind us and our own proprietary restoration materials, our fully trained technicians keep the finish flat and clear.
